The Alaska Native Science & Engineering Program (ANSEP) extends from middle school through graduate school and is designed to expose learners to career exploration and learning opportunities in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). The program includes hands-on learning, career exploration, internship opportunities and mentorship. ANSEP targets students that are underrepresented in STEM fields, particularly Alaska Native and nonurban students. While the program is open to all students, these learners specifically benefit from social and cultural experiences that are included in the ANSEP program to enhance students’ Alaska Native cultural identity.
This brief from the Urban Institute profiles an evaluation of the ANSEP program. The evaluation finds that students who participated in the program were able to learn about career opportunities, navigate college campuses and prepare for successful completion of a science or engineering degree.
